Lipedema, or painful fat syndrome, is a chronic condition that affects 1 in 9 women causing excess fat under the skin to accumulate in the lower body and upper arms. If left untreated, the condition can progress through various states of syptomatic severity.
There is no cure but the condition can be managed with compression therapy and certain types of liposuction procedures.

In the early state, lipedema typically appears as excess fat around the lower body, especially around the hips and thighs. Symptoms may be mild and not significantly affect appearance.

In mid-state lipedema, fat accumulates noticeably in the lower body, including the pelvis, thighs, and knees. The calves appear fuller and less tapered compared to earlier stages.
Compression therapy has been shown to be effective in managing mid-state lipedema symptoms¹,² by helping to reduce pain, tenderness, and bruising, which can help improve mobility⁴.
